Purpose:Everyone needs structure drawing software to create graphics of molecular structures and export them into papers, spreadsheets, websites, etc. A good program should provide an intuitive GUI interface, a variety of drawing tools and templates, control over the graphical details, and the ability to export the results in a variety of file formats as well as via the clipboard.
Recommended: ChemSketch 12 by Advanced Chemistry Development Laboratories (ACD Labs). This chemical drawing program is the ‘front end' used forrunning molecular calculations with ACD Labs' commercial modelingsoftware.Now in its 12
thversion, it contains most (but not all) of the features of commercial drawingpackages like ChemDraw, including 'tools for 2D structure cleaning, 3Doptimization and viewing, InChiI generation andconversion, drawing of polymers, organometallics, Markush structures, and IUPACsystematic naming capability for molecules with fewer than 50 atoms and 3rings' (allowing ACD Labs to blow their own horn a little).A 2009 review concludes that ChemSketch andChemDraw are the top two drawing programs available (and only ChemSketch is free to students).
ChemSketch12.0 will let you construct molecules in a variety of formats, add labels, andexport the resulting graphics via file or clipboard.As a bonus, it can be coupled with thefreeware ACD/3D Viewer to provide customizable 3D displays of your molecule (agreat way to learn organic stereochemistry). ChemSketch 12.0 runs inmost Windows environments, and a version is available for Linux (but not forthe Mac, at least so far).The freewareversion does not entitle you to technical support and a few features of the commercialversion are missing, but it performs ‘core functions' just like the commercialversion.
